Despite a struggling economy, the Convention Center has continued to be an integral part of San Diego’s tourism industry. In addition to supporting 12,500 jobs, the 2.6 million square foot center had an economic impact of $1.3 billion last year. It is projecting the same figure for this year. Because many events are booked five or more years in advance and it has a 75 percent repeat client rate, the Convention Center has remained resilient during the current recession. In fact, Convention Center officials say they turn away a year’s worth of business – or millions of dollars – annually.
